Becoming the Ultimate Trendsetter
Becoming The Ultimate…
With just four easy steps, you could transform
your plain Jane self to the ultimate trendsetter.
A trendsetter as defined in the dictionary is “One that initiates or popularizes a trend.” Are there really any trendsetters left? Or has the industry fooled us to thinking we are tren setting when really sub-consciously we are just imitating each other? None the less it is fun to think we are leaders so why not become the ultimate trendsetter, (or at least think we are) here are four easy steps to becoming one.
LEARN HOW TO SEW
If you're handy with the sewing machine you could get your old purple t-shirt from grade nine and sew it together with your brand new jean vest and secretly sneak into your mother’s jewellery box for her vintage broaches and viola! You have yourself a one of a kind fabulous vest that your friends will soon imitate.
BE FIERCE
To be a trendsetter you have to not only like attention, you must demand it. You have to walk straight and have your head held high. You have to market yourself not only to your friends and family but a true trendsetter is admired on the street, by complete strangers who go home that night and try to emulate your outfit.
HAVE A WILD IMAGINATION
It is so easy to put together an outfit and suddenly realize you look exactly like five girls in your textile’s class, so for this step you have to dig deep way back to that place that scares you sometimes in your head and get inspiration that only you could get access to. With a little bit of crazy mixed in your wardrobe you will no doubt create something spectacular.
RESEARCH
A true trendsetter always goggles fashion icons that lead the way before her. From Brigitte Bardo, to Madonna. A little research will inspire you to create classic and unique looks that will grace you with the Hollywood glow. Every trendsetter knows that the past will always reinvent it self, so to stay on top of the trends you will have to do your research that will put you ahead of everyone else.
Now that you know all the steps to be coming the ultimate trendsetter, you now have the responsibility to live up to these expectations. To make the whole experience a success
The key secret is to make it seem effortless to everyone without them knowing that you really have calculated every outfit, for every event.

confessions of a sneaker addict
service journalism piece
I can’t help but check out people’s shoes when I meet them. Yes, I know that this is not something that I should admit, but…… it is true! I consider myself to be a somewhat reforming ‘sneakerholic’ and don’t think that my traits and impulses will be dying anytime soon.
The worlds best known shoe collector and former Philippines first lady Imelda Marcos’ shoe fetish confirms that the average ‘sneaker addict’s problems could be much worse. The abundance of specialty stores such as ‘Goodfoot’ in Toronto and magazines such as ‘Complex’ are now dedicated to this culture and are fueling the industry, which is now becoming out of control. There has been a 350% increase in sneaker sales in the last two decades, and it is not about to slow down anytime soon. This commodity product has reached fever-pitch, as ‘sneaker-heads’ consistently camp outside their favorite store to be the first to grab the latest limited edition pair.
Though I have not been ‘under the influence’ for quite that long as some people, I am starting to feel the effects of exploitation. Companies such as ‘Nike’ and ‘Bathing Ape’ are to blame. The countless styles of bestselling models such as the “Dunk” or “AF1”, that are introduced each month are hard to keep up with. The marketing strategies of these companies prey on the innocent consumer, and drain the wallets of those that are addicted.
“Rules of Attraction”
I have to admit that the right pair of sneakers on the opposite sex (or the same) can be the quite an attraction. The shoes can not be cheap; however, this can be excused if they compliment the rest of the outfit. I love a guy in rare sneakers; this can be the greatest of all turn-ons; However, the wrong pair will put me off to superficial proportions. As soon as I see pair of ‘K-Swiss’, or ‘Sketchers’….it’s over before it begins!!
Though usually applied to the classic stereotype of stiletto-obsessed women, this fetish, I would say, is more prevalent among the ever-growing sneaker community. These are the new fashion-savvy shoe aficionados, and they are being watched by the corporate giants in the fashion industry.
LVMH, an international luxury conglomerate, are the owners of many luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Givenchy. One of their heavyweight brands is Fendi, who recently approached the Japanese streetwear designer Nigo (A Bathing Ape/ Ice Cream). The two fashion empires are clearly from different worlds, though they are both purveyors of high quality garments that are produced in limited quantities. Fendi’s goal is to establish an “ongoing personal and professional alliance”.(the Independent online news source) This, for example, is the coming of luxury and street/sneaker culture at its finest.
Sometimes fashion can surface from functionality; such examples include apparel for sports and the military, and in this case we are talking about sports. This brings me back to being your humble host. Yes, I have fallen victim to fashion a consumerism, but isn’t admitting ones afflictions the first step to recovery?

Photographer-Cover Shot
I got in touch with the photographer I mentioned in class. His name is Peter Tucker and he went to school at York University for Photography and graduated 4 years ago. He’s a freelance photographer and he works in a number of studios on top of that. I caught him at a good time because he needs to build up some more recent work related to fashion in his portfolio and he’s in the process of doing so. He agreed to do the cover and possibly more pictures if we decided to do articles on the bridle wear + gowns in exchange for some ad-space. So save a spot as for ad space for him, I didn’t let him know how large or where it would be so yeah, he’s pretty easy going.

Selling Your Advertisements
Hey! Just up-dating you on information for selling the ads. For those of you in class that do not know my name, I'm Randi - I am going to be the advertisement coordinator. I will be telling you guys which pages of the magazine will be taken as we sell the ads. I know it's early since we just started on this assignment today but let's not forget our dealines. Final booking and payment is due on Tuesday, March 16, 2007. Let's get out there and fill these pages! Our magazine is going to look so hot (just like us!)
Cosmetic Pursuit
Many advertisements feature hot new make-up and beauty products of the season. When hitting the shelf in search of a new bronzer, concealer, or moisturizer, do we really do our research before we buy the product?
Two of the largest selling products for women are concealers and foundation. What's the difference? The main purpose of concealer is to conceal blemishes, red spots and skin flaws. It is also used to hide imperfections and is great for hiding dark circles around the eyes. When buying concealer, it's always safer to look for brands that are non-comedogenic. This means that the product is water-based and oil-free, leaving your skin flawless and not as pore-clogging as an average buy. For example, Covergirl products can come cheap, which low budget buyers are always looking for. However, you usually get the short end of the stick when buying a lower-priced concealer. Ingredients include oils (such as seed or avocado oil), and also fragrance, which you want to stay away from for healthier looking skin, especially if your skin is susceptible to break-outs.
Foundation is used to even out your complexion or skin tone. Foundations come in all shades and brands, and depending on your skin type, it’s sometimes hard to find the right one. When purchasing foundation it is a good idea to match your desired shade to the colouring of your neck. A common mistake for people who use foundation is to go too dark, and often they don’t blend properly, leaving a big ring of uneven make-up around their face.
There also seems to be confusion as to the meanings of hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. Hypoallergenic is designed to reduce or minimize the possibility of an allergic reaction, by having few or no potentially irritating substances; which does not mean they won't clog your pores.
Nail polish is a fun and easy way to express ones’ self. Many women use it every day for beauty purposes however; men have also been known to use it as well. Nail polish can be a trend setter; for instance when the band Greenday came out with their punk-rock, four-fingers-painted look. It is also in high demand by beauty and nail salons, offered as an extra ‘treat’ for those pampering themselves. On the other hand, does anybody really know the effects from certain nail polishes?
OPI Products, Inc. is one of the highest nail polishes on demand in the United States and Europe. Toxins such as Phthalates, Formaldehyde and Toluene used in these polishes have been linked to birth defects, cancer, and other health concerns. OPI is the most toxic and frequently used brand of nail polish. Solutions to this setback are to buy polishes that do not contain Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) such as Arise Cosmetics, Honeybee Gardens, and Peacekeeper, which have all signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics release.
Like most things we use, there is also an expiration date for cosmetics. When do we know when to throw it away? Here are some guidelines that can be used:
If it has an odor. Believe it or not, your false eyelashes can smell too!
When it doubt, throw it out! If you know your cosmetics haven’t been used in quite some time, get rid of it. Bacteria builds up on brushes and mascara sticks too, so your doing yourself a favour.
Label when your cosmetics will expire. Take a piece of tape and/or marker and write the date you know you should throw it out.
Clean sweep! Take a few moments to clean out your cosmetics bag about every 2 months.
Some expiry dates are:
· Mascara: 3 months
· Lipstick/Liner: 2 years
· Lip gloss: 18-24 months
· Nail polish: 1 year
· Concealer: 12-18 months
· Foundations: Oil Free 1 year; Cream or Compact: 18 months
· Blush/ Bronzer: 2 years
· Eye shadow/Liner: 2 years
Keep in mind; cosmetics generally contain ingredients that help prolong shelf life expiration. Natural cosmetics should be thrown out soon than these dates because they do not include the same lab tested ingredients.
When buying your cosmetics, know that it’s a huge market. Sometimes you can get a bargain, but make sure it’s a safe one.

Possible Article for New Issue?
Oh My Dog!
Seems like “naked dogs” are a thing of the past!
It must be true; dogs are indeed man’s best friend. Globally there is an emerging trend of dog fashions and it seems to have no end in sight. Dog owners are aspiring to create a statement through their pets’ fashion.
Yet dog apparel is just the tip of the iceberg. Many dog shops cater to your four legged friends every need. They range from dog jewellery stores to canine gourmet bakeries specializing in dog pastries and even a four layer birthday cake. Did I forget to mention the dog hair stylists? In fact, this whole phenomenon stemmed from the grooming shops that have been a staple in dog culture for centuries.
However dog apparel is not all about the glitz and the glam, it truly is a necessity in our country’s subzero climate. Do you really think that a Chinese Crested Hairless is a native to Canada?
Smaller breeds have less body mass and for the most part don’t have a natural coat like a Golden Retriever. This gives them less protection against our harsh winter weather. Being inches from the cold winter ground also doesn‘t help. This is why dog boots, dog sweaters and dog coats are must haves and more than a trendy decoration.
Paw Protection
Shoes on dogs? Doesn’t sound very logical does it? This is actually one of the more important pieces of clothing for your urban dog. Have you ever gotten your heel stuck in a subway grate? These paw boots can protect your dog from such a fate, which could cause serious injury. The number one reason for boots is to protect your dog from salt and other chemicals used to melt ice. They can irritate your dog’s pads, resulting in a heavy vet bill.
Hot Dogs
When it comes to dog coats, you probably would think this is strictly a trend for toy breeds. Wrong! In fact the first canine winter coat was made for Grey Hounds. Small dogs are not the only ones in need of extra warmth. Shorthaired breeds, dogs that are sick or older dogs may need a little extra help with a sweater or coat. A cozy dog sweater raises your pet's body temperature and can protect them from temperatures below -40.
However, there is a lot more selection for the little ones, dog boutiques specializing in toy breeds are popping up left, right, and center.
What Size?
1. Measure the length from the collar to the base of tail. This measurement lets you know how the coat will fit the length of your dog.
2. The girth will determine the accurate size. Simply measure the distance around the girth behind the front legs.
3. Make sure your dog is standing upright and square, not sitting or slouching. If your dog is slightly big boned and you get an odd number, your best bet is to go up a size.
TIP: Just like human sizes, there is no standard sizing for dogs either. So keep your measurements handy when your shopping with you pampered pet and you’ll be one step ahead of the game.

more ideas for new issue.(dogy style.....)
Right after class I just remember a good idea for the next issue.
I have a lot of experience in the dog grooming industry, and a
great article would be on dog fashions, and dog culture.
