“Elegance is the only beauty that never fades”– Audrey Hepburn.
In the year of 2022, the second-hand industry increased by24% compared to 2021.Vintage clothes are in and are hereto stay. Second hand clothing has made a comeback. Depop is where it is at! Depop is one of the most popular re-selling platforms that was founded in 2011 in Italy by CEO Simon Beckerman. The Gen Z world is what they call it. 90% of Depop users are under the age of 26.
Why vintage?
It’s simple, quality over quantity. Fast fashion is no longer on top in fact, fast fashion has decreased the number of unique pieces, originality and individuality within the fashion industry. However, vintage wear has introduced a new look on fashion by promoting consumers to shop vintage. There are so many factors to why vintage is better. One being the better-quality vintage clothing offers by doubling the life cycle on clothing, and the fact that it is cost efficient. How many times have you bought a piece of clothing and only wore it once before it went missing on you? There is no need to break the bank on one item when you can shop vintage and save your money.
The rise of fashion
I remember growing up and having to go thrifting with my mom because we did not have enough money to buy new clothes and getting made fun of at school because thrifting or second-hand shopping was looked down upon. It is crazy to see how it has comeback full circle to where thrifting is now one of the latest trends. Consumers are now being very conscious on their fashion purchases not only because it is more practical by being more affordable, but also due to the benefits it has on the environment. Did you know that if every person bought at least one second-hand clothing the CO2 emission would be lower by more than 2 billion pounds? Second-hand clothing keeps less clothes out of the landfills and reduces global pollution that is caused by clothing production. Consumers have realized that vintage wear gives more room for expression. Ask anybody what fashion means to them and about more than half of the responses will include individuality and expression. Vintage is known for unique pieces that go years back and is still being able to be worn in 2023.
Depop is the blueprint
All though there are many second hand and vintage re-selling platforms, Depop seems to beat the top. The app acts both as a vintage shop and a social media platform allowing users to like, comment and message buyers. Depop has over 35 million registered users that are able to purchase and resell their clothing. The app caters to all different classes of people from the lower to upper end and also allows users to make extra income from selling their items.
