Figures Who Put the “F” in Fun and Fashion

Fashion and style should never be rule-bound, so here are three trendy people who let their pleasures be known while still maintaining a unique aesthetic.

Aliya Bah (@aliyahsinterlude)

From making hilariously conceited videos on TikTok to being invited to Fashion Week shows and walking on runways, Aliyah Bah (also known as aliyasinterlude online) ha s be come a notable influencer since 2022. Recognized by her alternative style which she has now coined as “Aliyah-core”, Aliyah began recording videos on TikTok ranging from funny blurbs and rants to GRWMs (get ready with me) where she would dress herself in her signature mini /micro skirts, torn up stockings, a well-fitted top, and of course, platform boots that you could never miss glimpse of. Aliya’s style is a reflection of her spunky and unapologetic personality, so much so that she has even faced backlash on twitter fo r her attire in particular settings! In November of 2022, Aliya posted photos to instagram and twitter of her posing on a beach in Jamaica wearing a pink bikini, pink fuzzy ear muffs, and pink Moon Boots, all to match her pink pixie cut! While this may seem like a normal post to her dedicated followers, people on twitter had some other opinions and questioned why she or anyone would choose to w ear boots at the beach. To no surprise, her fashionable followers came to her defence and Aliya nobly continues to march to the beat of her own drum.

 Steve Lacy

This R&B Grammy-winning musician has a “Bad Habit” of finding pleasure in style! California native Steve Lacy, who just had a record-breaking year after releasing his debut album Gemini Rights, has also maintained a reputation for being a stylish individual. La cy started out as a bassist, guitarist, and occasional vocalist in the R&B group, The Internet before he began recording solo projects like his hit songs “Some”, “ C U Girl”, and “Dark Red”. But that’s not all he has to offer! Lacy has also produced numerous tracks for various artists including Kendri ck Lamar, Kali Uchis, Tyler, The Creator, and many more. H e has also gained notoriety for his resourceful way of producing songs: an iPod and GarageBand. Lacy has developed his own sound which can be recognized by his sweet guitar riffs and smooth, clear vocals, which can be heard in his earlier projects. Aside from his music, Lacy can be seen having fun with fashion as he regularly posts his outfits on instagram and even has a dedicated page, @fitvomit, where he shares his fashion finds and garments that only the Steve Lacy could pull off. The singer also uses his fashion account to share more extensions of his self-expression like his bold tattoos, intricate hair styles, and shiny grills. Needless to say, this multi-faceted musician wears many hats when it comes to his personal style!

Erykah Badu

The earthy and ethereal Erykah Badu has always been known for her tall silhouettes with the help of her head wraps and long dresses, but this neo - soul sin ger has more fun with her style than just that! In an Interview with Vogue, Badu gave a tour of her Dallas home studio (or “Badu-dio”) showcasing her various adorned objects like singing bowls, tuning forks, and her infrared sauna, all of which help her creativity flow, while also being tools of spiritual alignment. Badu is also a big fan of gold jewelry, as she states in the Vogue interview, “I’m from Dallas, Texas. South Dallas, Texas to be exact; the home of people that actually get real gold teeth put in their mouth”, and then proceeds to show off her grill collection, one of which she custom - made to show a tuning fork across her teeth! During her most recent tour, the “Unfollow Me Tour”, the singer can be seen on stage wearing captivating pieces of clothing such as “anemone tails”, which are leg warmers made by a student designer named Myah Hasbany, that have captured the attention of many people as it resembles fuzzy sea anemones sprouting from Badu’s calves. Aside from her tall head wraps, Badu has also been seen wearing tall top hats, which have now become her staple look at award shows and fashion shows. It is clear to see, whether it’s the music she makes, the clothes she wears, or the objects she holds, many of Badu’s belongings are a reflection of her spirituality and creative genius, which is what makes her legendary style icon.
