Dark and Dismal vs Lavish and
Limitless
Exposing the fashion industry one fact at a time
The fashion industry is an incredible paradox filled with concealed truths. It
is portrayed as lavish and limitless, but what may be hard to believe is the dark
and dismal side to this industry that would send even the toughest
soul cowering for the hills. From the brightest runways to the shadiest slums,
today we are going to remove the mask, open the curtain, and reveal some of the
unspeakable events that take place every day.
Work Hard -
No pay
It doesn’t matter if you are a designer, intern, photographer
or a model, unpaid work is a common factor if you wish to work in the fashion
industry. Being able to say that you have worked for a prestigious brand or was
a part of a major event is crucial if you wish to make it big in this industry.
But unpaid work can only go on for so long before it starts becoming an issue,
workers should be paid fairly for the work they put in.
Not-so-fake,
fake fur
With people being more aware of the cruelty that animals
are subject to in the production of clothing, faux furs are exchanged for real
fur in order to fulfil our fur desires. Animal lovers and activists would be
disgusted to discover that a lot of the apparel advertised as being faux fur
actually contains genuine fur. This is due to the fact that it is
cheaper for manufacturers to use lower end animal furs then synthetic furs.
Nevertheless, consumers should be given a choice to spend more money on
something “faux” rather than be tricked into buying something that was
brutally killed.
Treacherous
working conditions
People are aware of the horrendous conditions that can
befall workers in manufacturing companies; in the past few years there have
been countless incidents that involved buildings crumbling to the ground and
that have resulted in the deaths of employees trapped inside. In a lot of cases
the factory was never up to code to begin with and should never have been
considered safe for someone to work in, because of this, workers are presented
with the possibility of suffering through unsafe and potentially
life-threatening conditions.
Waste
Not/Want Not
There is an insane amount of waste that comes from the
production of apparel each year, there is an estimated 2 million tons of
discarded clothing that ends up in the trash. All of this wastage also results
in 2 million tons of CO2 and 70 million tons of water wastage every year, how
outrageous is that!
Chemicals
and crops
Workers are contracting cancer and their children are being
born with mental and physical disabilities due to the chemical that are being
put on crops, this is a major issue that people are looking past.
Model
Mayhem
Models are expected to uphold a level of class that would
seem absurd to us mere mortals, they are painted as goddesses that portray
their lives as something so luxurious and impossible to achieve. But is this
accurate or is there another level we don’t see. Models are subjected to eating
plans and harmful conditions that lead to mental and physical illnesses, it is
known that models can suffer from depression and anxiety because of the level
of “perfection” they are expected to maintain. Separation from friends and
family, loneliness and rejection can also play a crucial part in this truth.
So where do we go from here?
