Trend or Faux: 5 wardrobe pieces that will stay in your wardrobe and out of landfills

You’re in the middle of cleaning out your closet and suddenly, you’re face to face with a pair of neon green zebra printed pants, you figure no one wants these clothes so you throw them away. Now, imagine the millions of other people just like you doing this and the copious amounts of clothing that is being thrown away each year. Out of your closet and into the landfills. The next time you are shopping for your next new piece, consider using some of these tips to style your outfit no matter what the current trends are.

The Denim Chore Coat

Originating in 19th Century France, the chore coat was not always the fashion statement it is today, think of it as more of a convenience piece. First coined as the bleu de travail, roughly translating to English as blue collar. The Chore Coat has a few tricks up its sleeve (or should I say in its pockets) when it comes to making any look casual. The loose fit and multiple pockets add an extra structural element to any outfit. This classic denim look is perfect for the fall and spring when you need that one extra layer to keep you warm and look cool.

The Structured Black Dress

The coveted little black dress. No, I’m not talking about the one that hangs in your mothers closet that is only taken out for weddings. I’m talking about the ones that you can wear to work, school, a night out with friends… quite literally anywhere. The Structure Black dress can be dressed up with a pair of heels or down by adding a baggy sweater and your favourite pair of Doc Martin’s. It is seasonally appropriate at any time of the year, wear it to your work Christmas party with some burgundy stockings or the first day of school. Having structure gives this article of clothing a long life with many different ways you can wear it.

Back to the Basics

The one shirt we all reach for when you’re too tired to even think about putting an outfit together, the tried and true: Plain Tee. Notice the word white being excluded from this conversation, The Plain Black Tee is the star today. It’s something that goes with everything, sleek, sexy and stain proof? As someone who spills their coffee on the way to the fridge to fetch milk, I appreciate some mistake concealer. The black tee can be a way to elegantly elevate your casual Monday fit, especially when you play with the silhouette and/or neckline. The next time you're shopping for basic wardrobe staples consider a scoop-next black tee.

Up Next to Bat, Hats!

There are two hats that have me dreaming of bad hair days. The Béret and the PaperBoy Hat have been seen being worn by our favourite celebrities, such as Harry Styles or in the school hallways by your fellow classmates. These timeless hats give a fashionable edge to any outfit, as well as a nod to style moguls of the past.

(Too) Hot To Go!

The temperamental ups and downs of Canadian weather, we all know them, we all loathe them. What do you wear when it’s -5 degrees outside but the classroom is 23 degrees and no extra room in your bag for a bulky sweater? You put on a light sweater that you can throw over your shoulders when you start getting too hot, or vice versa. In fact, why not throw it over the black tee mentioned earlier.
